Kyrgyz ruling party SDPK nominates current PM Jeenbekov to run for next presidential term
Current Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov has been nominated by the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK) to run for the next presidential term, Kyrgyz officials announced on Wednesday.
According to experts Mr. Jeenbekov is a "convenient" candidacy for current President Almzabek Atambayev, as the two have built stellar relations over the years. Mr. Atambayev often calls Mr. Jeenbekov his "loyal" friend, whom he can fully trust.
In December last year, Mr. Atambayev held a constitutional referendum, which empowered the post of the country's prime minister. Experts believe that by doing so he has prepared for himself the seat of the prime minister, his next step was to look for a "loyal" successor and Mr. Jeenbekov is a perfect candidate. The current PM has built a trustworthy reputation among the population during his tenure as the PM and generated enough connections with the northern "echelons of power" despite his southern background.
Other candidats for the presidency include another former PM Temir Sariev and leader of the Onuguu-Progress party Mr. Bakyt Torobayev and heavy favourite and also a former PM Mr. Omurbek Babanov.
